On
March 12, 2007, the USEPA published the Methods Update Rule
(MUR) which included the withdrawal of Freon-based methods
such as 413.1. The New Jersey Department of Environmental
Protection (NJDEP) will follow suit and drop Freon-based
methods including Method 418.1. NJDEP will continue to accept
TPH soil samples for Method 418.1 through a sampling date
of September 30, 2007. Water samples analyzed for TPH by
Method 418.1 will be accepted through a sampling date of
December 31, 2007. However, in the event that a permit requires
418.1 analysis, the permit shall override this rule.
For sampling after September 30, 2007, there are two methods
that are acceptable alternatives for 418.1. These are Diesel
Range Organics (DRO) - Method 8015B from SW-846 and the
NJDEP Method OQA-QAM-025, Rev.6. When petroleum contamination
at a site is known to be diesel/#2 fuel oil, the DRO option
is to be used. When the nature of the petroleum contamination
is unknown OQA-QAM-025, Rev.6 must be used. In the event
that petroleum contamination at a site is known to be gasoline,
refer to N. J. A. C. 7:26E, Subchapter 2.
